Instructions: these are modified versus prior instructions

This article is of a different genre from those we have read this semester; it is an essay. Read the essay from start to finish (it ought to go pretty quickly). Then set the article aside and answer the following two questions:

Question 1. In several sentences, summarize the essay's central argument. Do not simply paraphrase the abstract (or some other part of the essay); that will result in 0 points for the whole question. Note that if you cannot summarize an essay's main point after reading it, then you did not really understand it!

Question 2. State the fact, revelation, or assertion from the essay that you found most surprising.
