We have investigated the locality present in request traces seen by two real-world web services, SkyServer and TerraServer. The results show that substantial locality is present across several dimensions, validating the potential of our proposed infrastructure in improving service scalability and performance.
We have also built a prototype of DataSlicer on top of Microsoft's ASP.NET and evaluated its performance on an emulated WAN against a SOAP-based synthetic service whose workloads present the locality observed in the above two real-world services.
Our preliminary results show that DataSlicer can dynamically detect the locality and use this information to determine an efficient service replication strategy.
