mentioned a film I am now eager to see.  I had not known about the 
novel either.

A Google search of any of those titles shows it is Jean Cavailles.  
Among other things, he studied with Emmy Noether in Göttingen.  He 
fought in the resistance and was caught and shot.  Some of his work is 
now or has lately been in print in French.  I have never looked for it 
in English.

Bourbaki's first booklet on set theory was 1939.
