More than half of Nixon's ****statements**** he said.  Not sentences.  The
statement *that* the office was not burgled or whatever.  A statement is
what somebody says, what they assert, something specified by a "that"
clause.  Not what they utter, which is a bunch of noises.  The difference
between

    Nixon uttered the words "I was burgled"
    Nixon said that he was burgled.

Do read Chapter 2 of _Objects of Thought_ ("Propositions and Sentences"),
and also Chapter 7 as Hartley recommended.
