Ted,
Yes, that is interesting. Is there any feedback mechanism
we can devise by which to figure out the hot set.
Here is one idea:
Fix A1in and A1out to some values.
As you run, simulate your hit rate if A1in and A1out were a bunch
of different values.
Then if you find that some different value would be better, move
to that.

This has a kind of adaptive feel to it, but might work.

I remember that we were trying to think of adaptive mechanisms
for 2Q before we discovered that the performance was not
too sensitive to the parameters.

The problem with simulating many 2Qs is that the algorithm
becomes too complex -- no-on here would implement it.

My thought is this:
If the hit rate on Am is high, and items churn through Am quickly,
then Am is too small.
If the hit rate on Am is small, and the rate at which new items
are admitted to Am is low, then Am is too large.

So, the issues are:
1) what is "too large, too small"
2) how to detect it reliably
3) how much to adjust once you detect a problem.

Automatic tuning might help with the page replacement algorithms also.

	Ok, here's a naive thought.
	Like conservationists tagging fish, we'll tag files.
	If a file comes in and has an Am tag, then Am gets an "I was too
	small" vote.
	If a file comes in and has an A1in flag, then Am gets a "I was too
	large" vote.

	We reset these counts each time Am changes size.

	If the "too small" beat the "too large" by some factor (I don't
	have good intuition on this one but an experiment might
	tell us), then increase Am,
	else either leave Am alone or decrease it.

Dennis,
A take it you mean, tag a file with the queue it was in when it
last exited the buffer.

It is an interesting idea, but:
1) tagging files is likely to be dismissed as infeasible
2) if the tag is too old, it doesn't mean anything.

A way to solve both opbjections at once is to make use of an
"exit tag" queue: when a file is kicked out of
A1out or Am, pur it in the eexit queue with the correesponding label.
ignore files not in the exit queue for Am tuning.

going a bit further, it really only makes sense to put files
kicked out of Am into the exit queue.
the A1out queue hit rate already tells you about misses
on files that could still be in A1in.

Finally, if you record the position in the buffer,
you get information about the marginal nbenefit of increasing
Am vs. increasing A1in.

Actually, that seems to be a good way of detecting
churning vs. hit rate.
I'll think about it a little more.
